Introduction

Discover the authentic and lesser-known heart of the Balkans on this all-seasons, 4-day exploration of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This circle tour is designed for travelers seeking to venture off the beaten path, moving beyond the well-trodden routes to uncover the country's rich historical layers, spiritual depth, and serene landscapes.

We will guide you through a journey that connects poignant modern history with medieval grandeur, from the iconic UNESCO-listed city of Mostar to tranquil monasteries, powerful waterfalls, and family-run wineries. Experience Bosnia as a country of profound contrasts, enduring faith, and warm, welcoming traditions.

Day after day description

Day 1. We depart Sarajevo and travel to the Tunnel of Hope Museum, a crucial underground passage used during the city's siege in the 1990s, symbolizing survival. We then journey to Travnik to explore its imposing medieval fortress, dating to the 14th century, and enjoy a stroll along the picturesque Lasva River. After that, we will come to Bugojno for accommodation.

Day 2. After staying in Bugojno, we travel to Scit to visit its serene Franciscan (Roman Catholic) monastery, a key spiritual and cultural center, and its insightful museum. Our journey continues south to the iconic city of Mostar to explore its famous historical center (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the reconstructed 16th-century Stari Most (Old Bridge), a symbol of unity. We will stay in Mostar.

Day 3. After an overnight stay in Mostar, we travel to the enchanting Ottoman-era hill town of Pocitelj (UNESCO Tentative List Site), renowned for its preserved stone architecture. We then visit the magnificent Kravica waterfalls, a stunning natural amphitheater of cascades on the Trebizat River. Our day continues to Medjugorje, a world-renowned Roman Catholic pilgrimage center since 1981. After that, we will return to Mostar for accommodation.

Day 4. After staying in Mostar, we take a short drive to Blagaj to visit the stunning Dervish monastery (Tekija) (UNESCO Tentative List Site), a 16th-century Sufi (Islamic) retreat built at the powerful spring of the Buna River. We then enjoy a tasting at the Podrumi Andrija winery, sampling local Herzegovinian vintages. On our return journey, we stop in Konjic to see its iconic Old Stone Bridge from the 17th century before arriving back in Sarajevo.

Počitelj is a small Ottoman-Mediterranean settlement, built along the Neretva river, conveniently located on the major road between Dubrovnik and Mostar. Architecturally, the stone-constructed parts of the town are a fortified complex, in which two stages of evolution are evident: medieval and Ottoman.

Blagaj has eleven national monuments, and is famous for the spring of the Buna river coming from cave, historical Dervish monastery (tekija) built around 1520, and medieval fortress Blagaj Fort, town-fortress complex built on a 310 meters high karst hill. Blagaj is also known as a residential area of Bosnian rulers and royal families.

The town is one of the oldest permanent settlements in Bosnia-Herzegovina (dating back almost 4000 years), and home to the iconic Konjic Old Stone Bridge, constructed in 1683 during the Ottoman era. Konjic is also famous for its woodcarving tradition. Konjic natural heritage together with the cultural heritage represent rich and valuable resources for Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as Europe.
