Tour descriptionWe welcome you to explore lesser-known locations of Central Greece with our 10-day off-season circle tour from Igoumenitsa. Traveling to lesser-known locations offers the unique benefit of authentic and immersive cultural experiences. Unlike popular tourist spots often saturated with visitors, these destinations allow for meaningful interactions with locals who are genuinely welcoming and willing to share their traditions, customs, and lifestyles. Our tour will start with visiting the Necromanteion of Acheron (oracle of the dead), an unusual site with an ancient Greek temple of necromancy devoted to Hades and Persephone. Another place we will visit is the archaeological site Cassope, a magnificent and remote site on a high platform overlooking the sea. We are going to stay 2 nights in the coastal town of Preveza because on the second day we will come to explore the large archaeological site Nicopolis (UNESCO Tentative List site), the capital city of the Roman province Epirus. After Nicopolis, on the way to Lefkada, we will visit the small fishing village Koronisia and will come to Arta, to walk over the impressive four-arched stone bridge known from Roman times and visit the archaeological museum. After Arta, we will visit the coastal town Vonitsa, with its impressive fortress and beautiful promenade crossed to a small islet. After a night in Lefkada, we will see Faneromeni monastery, located high above Lefkada between pine trees, and admire the panoramic view. Later, we will take a road around Lefkada lagoon, to admire the beautiful surroundings. Before coming to Nafpaktos, we also will see the archaeological site Oeniadae (UNESCO Tentative List site), an ancient Greek city known for its well-preserved shipyard, and the Messolonghi lagoon. In Nafpaktos, we will come to see the Nafpaktos fortress, and after we will take a small trip inland to see two remote and less-known monasteries: the women's monastery of Saints Nektarios & Fanourios and the men's monastery of Saints Augustine & Seraphim Sarov. After visiting monasteries, we will continue our way to the mountain town Arachova, and on the way, we will stop for lunch in the coastal town Galaxidi. After Arachova, we will take the road toward Kalampaka, and on the way, we will visit the Thermopylae infocenter and see fortresses in the towns Lamia and Trikala. From Kalampaka, we will come to climb the steps of several Meteora monasteries (UNESCO World Heritage site). After Meteora, we will come to see the mountain town Metsovo, famous for its wine and cheese. In Ioannina, we will see its Ottoman castle, beautiful cave, Silversmith Museum of Weapons and Jewelry, and on the way back to Igoumenitsa, we will visit the archaeological site Dodoni (UNESCO Tentative List site) with its huge ancient theater.
