Introduction

Travel with us on an enriching 3-day mini tour from the coastal town of Makarska, crossing into neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina to discover its profound cultural and natural heritage. This compact journey is designed to introduce you to the region's most captivating treasures, from the world-famous pilgrimage center of Medjugorje to the iconic UNESCO-listed city of Mostar and the serene landscapes of eastern Herzegovina.

We will guide you through a land where Ottoman legacy, Christian spirituality, and breathtaking nature intertwine. You will encounter the mystical Dervish monastery of Blagaj, explore ancient stecci tombstones at Radimlja, admire the imposing fortress of Stolac, visit the historic Tvrdos monastery with its wine cellars, and descend into the fascinating underground world of Vjetrenica cave. This itinerary offers a perfect glimpse into the soul of Herzegovina.

Day after day description

Day 1. We depart from Makarska and cross into Bosnia-Herzegovina, traveling first to Medjugorje, a world-renowned Roman Catholic pilgrimage center that has attracted millions of visitors since reported apparitions began in 1981. We then continue to the iconic city of Mostar to explore its famous historical center (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and admire the reconstructed 16th-century Stari Most (Old Bridge), a powerful symbol of reconciliation. Our accommodation for the night is in Mostar.

Day 2. After staying in Mostar, we take a short drive to Blagaj to visit the stunning Dervish monastery (Tekija) (UNESCO Tentative List Site), a 16th-century Sufi (Islamic) retreat dramatically built at the source of the emerald Buna River. We then travel to Radimlja to see the remarkable medieval stecci (tombstone) necropolis (UNESCO World Heritage Site) from the 15th-16th centuries. Our journey continues to Stolac to admire its ancient hilltop fortress (UNESCO Tentative List Site), with origins dating to the 5th century. After that, we will come to Trebinje for accommodation.

Day 3. After staying in Trebinje, we travel to Tvrdos to explore its Serbian Orthodox monastery, originally founded in the 15th century, and sample local wines at its winery. We return to Trebinje to see the elegant Arslanagic Bridge from the 16th century and visit the hilltop Hercegovacka Gracanica church, which offers panoramic views of the city. Finally, we explore the fascinating Vjetrenica cave system (UNESCO World Heritage Site), renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity and spectacular underground formations. After that, we return to Makarska, where our memorable journey concludes.

The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia-Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks, and is considered one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.

Blagaj, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Blagaj is a village in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of Bosnia-Herzegovina, located in about 15 km from Mostar, and is one of the most valuable mixed urban and rural built environments in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Blagaj has eleven national monuments, and is famous for the spring of the Buna river coming from cave, historical Dervish monastery (tekija) built around 1520, and medieval fortress Blagaj Fort, town-fortress complex built on a 310 meters high karst hill. Blagaj is also known as a residential area of Bosnian rulers and royal families.

Radimlja, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Stolac and surroundings have been inhabited since ancient times due to the area's favorable natural environment. The rich grounds along with other natural benefits attracted prehistoric man, and later the Illyrians, Romans and Slavs, all of whom left a wealth of anthropological evidence. The area has been settled for at least 15,000 years.

Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The famous monastery Tvrdos, located about five kilometers from Trebinje, dates back to the Middle Ages and it is believed that it was founded by the Czar, Saint Constantine, and his mother Saint Helen. Vjetrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Vjetrenica (the wind cave) is the largest and most important cave in Bosnia-Herzegovina, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the most important caves in the Dinaric Alps mountain range, which is famous worldwide for its karstic and speleological richness. It is a real treasure in biodiversity. Also, it is the home to the famous olm (cave aquatic salamander) and houses beautiful cave formations as well.
