Introduction

Join us on a relaxing discovery of central Croatia, a 4-day mini tour crafted for seniors, mature travelers, and couples who appreciate history, sightseeing, and scenic drives without hurry. Following the Slow Tourism philosophy with no rush and no tight schedules, this journey takes you from the coastal city of Zadar into the fascinating hinterland, where you will explore castles, fortresses, museums, and even a modern aquarium.

Travel with us along scenic roads that connect well-known destinations like Nehaj Fortress and Trsat Castle, but also uncover off-the-beaten-path hidden gems such as the House of the Halubajski Bell Ringers and the House of Fairy Tales in Ogulin. Experience cultural aspects of continental Croatia, learn about local food and drinks, and immerse yourself in stories that blend history, science, folklore, and tradition. This is a tour where you can truly savour every moment, free from tight schedules.

Day after day description

Day 1. We depart from Zadar and travel to the Nikola Tesla Memorial Centre in Smiljan, birthplace of the famous inventor. We explore the museum dedicated to Tesla's life and groundbreaking work in electricity and engineering. We then continue to Nehaj to see the imposing Nehaj Fortress, a 16th-century square tower built by Croatian nobles to defend against Ottoman incursions. After that, we will come to Senj for accommodation.

Day 2. After staying in Senj, we travel to Frankopan Castle Nova Kraljevica, a beautifully preserved Renaissance fortress that once belonged to the influential Frankopan noble family. We then visit the House of the Halubajski Bell Ringers, a unique museum showcasing the traditional carnival masks and bell-ringing custom of the Kastav region, recognized as intangible cultural heritage. Our journey continues to Trsat to explore Trsat Castle, a medieval fortress overlooking Rijeka, famous for its sanctuary and panoramic views of the Kvarner Bay. After that, we will come to Rijeka for accommodation.

Day 3. After staying in Rijeka, we travel to Stara Susica to see the romantic ruins of Stara Susica Castle, a medieval fortress surrounded by legend. We then continue to Dubovac to explore Dubovac Fortress, a well-preserved hilltop castle overlooking the town of Karlovac. Our day concludes at Aquatika, the freshwater aquarium in Karlovac, which showcases the diverse aquatic life of Croatia's rivers and lakes. After that, we will come to Karlovac for accommodation.

Day 4. After staying in Karlovac, we travel to Ogulin to explore the town's impressive Ogulin Castle (Castle of the Frankopans), a 16th-century fortress surrounded by a deep moat and connected to local legends. We then visit the Heritage Ethnographic Museum, showcasing traditional rural life and crafts, and the charming House of Fairy Tales, dedicated to the stories of Ivana Brlic-Mazuranic, Croatia's beloved children's author. Finally, we return to Zadar, where our memorable journey concludes.
