Blue eye description

The Blue Eye in Albania is a natural freshwater spring and natural phenomenon. This phenomenon is also known as "springs of Bistricë" as it is the initial water source of Bistrice river, 25 km long, which ends in the Ionian Sea south of Sarande.

The Blue Eye is located just outside the remote village is about 22 km to the east of Sarande, in the south of Albania. The protected area of Blue Eye has been designated as a natural monument which covers an area of 180 ha.

Blue Eye is a natural wonder waiting to be explored. Tucked within the lush landscapes of southern Albania, the Blue Eye (Syri i Kalter) is a hypnotic natural spring that captivates travelers with its crystal-clear waters and enchanting surroundings. Known for its vibrant hues and serene ambiance, this geological marvel is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Whether you're drawn to its tranquil beauty or the myths that shroud it, the Blue Eye promises an unforgettable experience.

The Blue Eye derives its name from its striking appearance: a deep, circular pool resembling a pupil, surrounded by shades of sapphire and turquoise that fade outward like an iris. The spring bubbles up from an underground aquifer, creating a mesmerizing effect as water gushes tirelessly from depths exceeding 50 meters. Despite its seemingly placid surface, the current beneath is surprisingly strong, adding to the site's mystique. The water remains icy year-round, rarely rising above 10°C, making it a refreshing spot to dip your toes on a warm day.

Visitors are greeted by a scene of untouched beauty. The spring is nestled within a forest of sycamores, pines, and fig trees, offering shaded picnic areas and peaceful walking trails. Wooden platforms surround the pool, allowing travelers to gaze into its depths or capture photos of the dazzling color contrasts. For the adventurous, short hikes through the surrounding hills reveal panoramic views of the Albanian countryside, where rolling green slopes meet distant mountain ridges.

While swimming in the main spring is discouraged due to its powerful currents, smaller nearby streams and pools provide safer opportunities to cool off. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, home to species like kingfishers, otters, and rare fish that thrive in the pristine waters.

As a part of practical tips for visitors: the Blue Eye is accessible year-round, though spring and early autumn are ideal for mild weather and smaller crowds. Entrance fees are minimal, and the site is well-signposted from the main road between Saranda and Gjirokastër. There need to wear sturdy shoes for exploring uneven paths, and bring a light jacket—the shade of the forest can feel cool even on hot days. While facilities are basic (think simple cafes and restrooms), the raw beauty of the area more than compensates.

Albania's Blue Eye is more than just a natural attraction, it's a portal to the country's unspoiled charm. From its hypnotic waters to the cultural treasures nearby, this gem invites travelers to slow down and savor the magic of the Balkans. Whether you're passing through on a road trip or planning a dedicated visit, the Blue Eye promises to leave you spellbound, one shimmering ripple at a time.
