The Blue Eye in Albania is a natural freshwater spring and natural phenomenon. This phenomenon is also known as "springs of Bistricë" as it is the initial water source of Bistrice river, 25 km long, which ends in the Ionian Sea south of Sarande.
The Blue Eye is located just outside the remote village is about 22 km to the east of Sarande, in the south of Albania. The protected area of Blue Eye has been designated as a natural monument which covers an area of 180 ha.
There in the Blue Eye is possible to swim, but the water is ice-cold. Above the spring, there is a staircase and a balcony. The balcony is intended for people to look into the spring, but many young people use it to jump into the water.
Despite the legend, in fact, the water of the Blue Eye originates from a cave. The dark center of the cave creates that deep blue color. The spring pumps water from the cave at high pressure, creating this wonder of the Albanian nature.
The Blue Eye is a vertical spring that's at least 50 meters deep. Divers have descended to 50 meters, but it is still unclear what the actual depth of the karst hole is.
