The Adriatic Sea and the Karavasta Lagoon are about 5 km and 2 km away from Divjake, respectively. Between Divjake and the sea lies the Divjaka-Karavasta National Park, which includes the lagoon and a coastal pine forest and is a Ramsar protected area. On the narrow tongue of land between the lagoon and the sea is the beach of Divjake.
There is no much information about how and where the Divjake name came from; there are several theories on that. One theory is that the name Divjake comes from the word Divija that means two lines. In fact, the town is bordered by two waterways, the Shkumbin estuary in the north, and the Seman delta in the south.
From the another theory, an ancient village which says that it got its name from the root of the word Div in the Albanian language Dif-Diva, it is used for supernatural animals and figuratively for people with mammoth force, powerful and huge.
The name Divjake is mentioned for the first time in Turkish documents in the years 1441-1443-1445. These documents are in the town museum. Another document that shows the origin of the name Divjake is the legendary name of the divas of the fairy tale of the time which suits Princess Marika Matranga and shows the dissolution of this family with that of the Muzakaj princes of Berat. This tale heard in Lushnje by some elderly people.
Also in the time of Turkey and until late before the liberation, the province where Divjake was part was called Karatoprak (from Turkish -and black-), this province included the villages between Terbuf and Gjoli of Karavastas to Libofshe, but the locals did not call themselves Karatoprakas but Divjakas.
As far as is known, the word Divjake does not derive from any tribe name, adjective, or previous toponym, and it should not have come from the natives, but from other people who first set foot in this country and the inhabitants of this country.
From the archaeological discoveries, the face of a woman in relief, Erinia, the goddess of revenge, carved on a small block of limestone, make a special interest. This work was found on the outer wall of the Church of Divjake. Until recently, it was exhibited in the town museum. Her hair was treated like half snakes and hair with an open mouth that showed the horror.
On another block of limestone on the wall of the church, the portrait of the Illyrian Emperor, Constantine the Great (306-332) dressed in the Illyrian folk shirt is presented in relief. From these facts we can say with certainty that Divjake and its area were inhabited before the influx of Slavs and before our era. In addition to numerous archaeological findings, according to Turkish documents from the years 1441-1450, it appears that Divjake was owned by someone named Dhimiter Prespa. Then it passed to the owner of one Zakonas Bey, who is mentioned in history for his relationship with Gjergj Kastriotin-Skenderbeu.
From 1450 of the 15th century, the town remained in the hands of one named Zurgo, later after 1450 it became the property of the Sultan's mother. At this time, the people were forced to pay many taxes; also for the reason that they were Christians they had to pay the initiation tax, and to work wages on the land of the Turks.
In the vicinity of Divjake, there used to be a village called Kular. This village got its name from several reliefs in the form of kulares that were formed by the flow of the Shkumbin river. Due to the numerous floods from the river, the inhabitants were forced to leave the village and go to Divjake, where several tribes lived and still live, such as Tashi, Janko.
It is thought that the hills of Divjake up to the vicinity of Terbufi have been inhabited since ancient times. This is proven by many archaeological objects found in these hills, as well as by the many graves found in these places.
Divjake-Karavasta National Park has an area of 1250 ha and is located 5 km from the city of Divjake and 40 km from the town of Lushnje. This park is also part of the Karavasta Lagoon complex, which has been under the protection of the International Ramsar Convention since 1994. This park constitutes one of the most important ecosystems of the entire country. This is especially for the rich fauna where the most typical representative is the curly pelican, which accounts for about 6.4% of the world population. This is the westernmost nesting point of this bird in Europe.
