Međugorje (Medjugorje) description

Medjugorje is a small town and a Marian shrine located in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, around 25 km of Mostar and close to the border of Croatia. Since 1981, it has become a popular site of Catholic pilgrimage due to the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local children. Millions of pilgrims from all over the world have visited it and have left spiritually strengthened and renewed.

Each year more and more people come here, in the heart of Herzegovina, to pray, find peace and strengthen their faith. The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the six children for the first time on June 24, 1981. According to the unanimous testimony of the seers, Virgin Mary sends through them to all believers messages of peace, love, faith, fasting, prayer and promises.

Each pilgrim visits the parochial Church of St. Jacob, located in the center of the town, the Hill of Apparition in Bijakovići (the place where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared for the first time) and the Hill of Cross (the highest mountain in the area) where a huge cross completes the parish's Stations of the Cross). The Medjugorje parish received a relic of the True Cross of Jesus from Rome and put it into this cross. Climbing the Mountain of the Cross is one of the main parts of any pilgrimage to Medjugorje. It is a symbolic effort that helps people reconsider their connection with God and the things they need to change in their lives to become closer to Him.

Cross Mountain is central to one's pilgrimage to Medjugorje. It is a penitential climb that lead pilgrims to reflect upon their relationship with God and what they need to change in their lives to draw closer to Him. Often deep healing, cleansing and peace is experienced at the summit of the mountain, at the foot of the cross, after pilgrims arrive at the top.

Going on a pilgrimage is different from an actual trip, mainly because your focus will be on the inner explorations than on the external attractions. Even though Medjugorje focuses in offer a spiritual journey for the visitors, it is a bustling tourist hotspot.
