Sarajevo's history dates back to the Neolithic Age. The Romans extended their conquests into the territory of modern Bosnia during the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE, encountering Illyrian tribes.
During the 4th and 5th centuries CE, Roman armies suffered heavy defeats in this region at the hands of invading Goths. When the Goths were eventually driven out of the Balkans by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I in the early 6th century, the Bosnian territory became part of the Byzantine Empire. Slavs began to settle in this territory during the 6th century, with two powerful tribes, the Croats and the Serbs, emerging in the 7th century.
In 1448, Ottoman forces captured an important part of central Bosnia, centred on the settlement of Vrhbosna, which they developed into the city of Sarajevo. The Ottomans brought significant cultural and architectural influences, establishing Sarajevo and Mostar as major regional centers of trade and urban culture. Bosnians played influential roles in the Ottoman Empire's cultural and political history, emerging as mystics, scholars, and celebrated poets.
In 1908, Bosnia-Herzegovina was formally annexed by Austria-Hungary, leading to a sense of urgency among nationalists. The political tensions culminated on June 28, 1914, when Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, setting off a chain of events that led to the outbreak of World War I.
After World War I, Bosnia-Herzegovina became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Following World War II, it remained part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. In the 1990s, the country experienced a devastating war, with Sarajevo being besieged for nearly four years. The Dayton Peace Accord in 1995 created two entities: one for Serbs and one for Bosnian Muslims and Croats.
Sarajevo is a city with a rich history and cultural heritage. Longstanding traditions in Catholicism, Islam, Eastern Orthodoxy and Judaism blend together to make the city arguably the most eclectic cultural mix of all the capitals of Europe.
Sarajevo is the only major European city which has a mosque, Catholic church, Orthodox church and synagogue within the same neighborhood. Due to its long and rich history of religious and cultural diversity, Sarajevo is sometimes called the "Jerusalem of Europe" or "Jerusalem of the Balkans".
Sarajevo, with snowy winters and hot summers, is the focal point for most of the nation's cultural and urban activities. Sarajevo is a prominent center of culture in the Balkans, with its region-wide influence in entertainment, media, fashion, and the arts.
Sarajevo has many parks throughout the city and on the outskirts of city. In winter, Sarajevo's mountain resorts Bjelašnica and Jahorina offer some of Europe's best-value skiing. Stroll through the cobbled Turkish-style alleys of the Old Town and boulevards dotted with Austro-Hungarian facades of the center is reason enough to spend a few days in Sarajevo.
Much of the architecture in Sarajevo's city center still reflects Austro-Hungarian empire cultural assimilation. Through the 20th century Sarajevo suffered three wars (World War I and II, as well as the conflicts and siege of the '90s). Sarajevo has been undergoing post-war reconstruction, and is the fastest growing city in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Despite its troubled history, today's Sarajevo shines.
The tourism in Sarajevo is mainly focused on historical, religious, cultural sites and winter sports (Sarajevo was the site of the 1984 Winter Olympics). Some of the main tourist attractions include:
Baščaršija: The old town, with its narrow streets and historic buildings, is a must-visit.
Gazi Husrev-bey's Mosque: A beautiful example of Ottoman architecture, built in the 16th century.
Sarajevo Tunnel Museum: A museum showcasing the tunnel that was used during the siege of Sarajevo.
Latin Bridge: The site where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, sparking World War I.
Mount Trebević: Offers panoramic views of the city and is a popular hiking spot, with recently recovered funicular.
