Makarska, at the foot of the Biokovo Mountain (designated as nature park because of its ecological biodiversity) and along the Adriatic coast, has always been the touristic, cultural, administrative and economic center of the Makarska Riviera. Makarska is one of the most famous tourist destinations on the Croatian coast, that attracts for its rich Mediterranean vegetation, wonderful weather, tourist attractions, events and lively atmosphere. Makarska is well known for its sandy beach, which is almost 2 kilometers long. The pretty walkways are lined with palm trees and surrounded by beautiful beaches, hotels, museums, galleries, restaurants, cafes and more. There is a lot to do, suitable for all ages. There is also a ferry that runs from Makarska to Sumartin on the island Brač for those that want to take a trip to one of the Croatian islands. During the summer months the harbor fills up with yachts and tourist ships. Makarska boasts of a rich culture and heritage. One of its most prominent landmarks is the Franciscan monastery that recently celebrated its 500th anniversary. The monastery houses a Malacological museum which has the largest collection of snails, shells and mussels in the world. Fossils from the region are also on display. The St. Petar Park is a spot with a beautiful view of the city, magnificent Mount Biokovo and the open sea. All in all, it's a good holiday destination for those who want a bit of a mix of everything, from beaches to lively nightlife, as well as a bit of hiking adventure.
