Acrocorinth description

Acrocorinth, understood as "Upper Corinth", is the acropolis of Ancient Corinth, is a monolithic rock overseeing the ancient city of Corinth, Greece. It is count as the most impressive from all acropolis of mainland Greece.

Acrocorinth is a striking and monumental rock formation that towers over the ancient city of Corinth in Greece. Known as the Acropolis of Corinth, it stands about 575 meters high and offers a commanding view of the surrounding plains and seas, making it an extraordinary natural and historical landmark. It is often regarded as the most impressive acropolis on mainland Greece, reflecting both its natural grandeur and historical significance.

Strategically positioned, Acrocorinth controlled access to the Peloponnese peninsula by guarding the Isthmus of Corinth. The fortress built on this rocky height was a critical defensive stronghold for many civilizations through centuries, defending against invading forces. Its importance made it a last refuge in southern Greece, with its natural terrain and water supply ensuring prolonged resistance.

Historically, Acrocorinth has been continuously inhabited from the archaic period until the early 19th century. It formed one of the "Fetters of Greece" during the Hellenistic period, serving as one of three crucial fortresses used by Macedonians to maintain control over city-states. Its fortifications reflect layers of history from Roman rebuilding efforts to Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman renovations.

The hill features three circuit walls that fortified its perimeter, made to prevent enemies from breaching this pivotal military position. At its peak stood a temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite, which later became a church and then a mosque, revealing the cultural and religious transformations that occurred through time. Acrocorinth's location offers visitors stunning panoramic views. On clear days, one can see the Corinthian Bay, Saronic Bay, plains of Argos, and distant mountain ranges. This breathtaking vista alone provides a compelling reason for tourists to explore the site and experience ancient Greece's dramatic landscape.

The archaeological remains at Acrocorinth are extensive. Visitors can explore fortified walls, gates, medieval towers, Byzantine churches, and Ottoman mosques. The site also includes ruins of houses, military buildings, cisterns, springs, and baths, delivering a rich tapestry of architectural and historical evidence from various epochs.

For tourists, Acrocorinth is not just a fortress but a sprawling historical park with many points of interest. Hiking trails allow visitors to wander through this ancient stronghold, imagining the strategic battles and daily lives of its former occupants from antiquity through medieval times. The large fortress complex housed not only soldiers but also civilians during its later phases, including Muslims and Christians during the Ottoman period, adding a layer of social history to the architectural and military story told by the ruins.

Its long history of changing hands, from Macedonians to Romans, Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans, makes each visit an encounter with different architectural styles and cultural influences. This diversity is visible in the structures still standing today, making it a unique site for history enthusiasts. The site's mythological connections add an additional layer of intrigue. Ancient legends tell of the god Helios and the goddess Aphrodite, linked to the fortress and temple atop Acrocorinth. The temple was reputedly built by Medea in honor of Aphrodite, enhancing the site's mystique for visitors interested in Greek mythology.

Acrocorinth's water supply was legendary and a key factor in its enduring habitation and defense. A spring called Peirini was said to have been brought to the fortress through mythical intervention, ensuring that residents had water even during sieges, a rare and valuable defense feature for ancient fortresses.

Its proximity to ancient Corinth makes Acrocorinth an essential part of a broader historical tour in the region. Visitors often combine trips to the archaeological sites of ancient Corinth and the Corinth Canal with a visit to Acrocorinth, creating a comprehensive understanding of the area's rich past.

Though the site is not itself a UNESCO World Heritage designation, its significance within the historical and archaeological context of Greece is widely recognized and it features as one of Greece's prime medieval castle sites, reflecting its importance across many eras.

Visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of the site, where they can enjoy early morning quiet, watch the sunrise over the ancient fortress, and explore its many gates and walls at leisure. The site's natural environment combined with historical remains creates a serene yet inspiring place to visit. Exploring Acrocorinth allows for a firsthand look at the complex history of Greece's defensive architecture, with visible layers of construction and restoration revealing evolving military technologies and styles over time. This makes it a fascinating site for those interested in military history and archaeology alike.

Finally, Acrocorinth's remarkable blend of natural beauty, historical significance, mythological associations, and well-preserved ruins make it a must-see destination for tourists seeking to connect with Greece's ancient and medieval heritage in a spectacular setting.

We welcome you to travel with us off the beaten path across Central Greece. Our 9-day circle tour from Athens will come to many lesser-known places: archaeological sites with ancient theaters and museums, small ancient monasteries, Mycenaean acropolis and tombs, fortresses and castles, beautiful coastal towns and taverns where locals eat.

We will start our tour with visiting Brauron, one of the twelve cities of ancient Attica, nowadays known as the sanctuary of Artemis, to see its archaeological site and museum. Our next destination is the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods, founded by Herodes Atticus around 160 AD, which today contains ruins of Roman baths and several elegant statues of Egyptian gods.

After that, we will come to Marathon, that town where the Battle of Marathon was in 490 BCE, in which the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians. Legend has it that Pheidippides, a Greek herald at the battle, was sent running from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory, which is how the marathon running race was conceived in modern times. In Marathon, we will explore its archaeological museum.

We will stay two nights in Chalkida (also known as Chalcis or Halkida). From here, we will come to explore the archaeological site of Eretria (UNESCO Tentative List site) with its ancient theater and museum. Eretria was an important Greek polis in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, mentioned by many famous writers and actively involved in significant historical events. The earliest mention of Eretria was by Homer in his Iliad, who listed Eretria as one of the Greek cities that sent ships to the Trojan War.

In Chalkida, we will come to Karababa Castle, an Ottoman castle of the 17th century, to look around, see its small museum with fantastic sculptures from Venetian times, and admire a beautiful viewpoint over the south bay of Chalkida.

From Chalkida, we will come to the town of Thiva (also known as Thebes), one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, which played an important role in Greek myths. This is that Thebes that ended Spartan hegemony at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC. Here we will explore its archaeological museum.

We will walk along a beautiful river, passing by the old medieval part of Livadeia, and will learn the history of the local oracle. In Chaeronea, we will see its ancient theater and see the Lion of Chaeronea. According to Pausanias, the lion was erected by the Thebans to commemorate their fallen.

We will stay overnight in the town of Amfikleia and come in the morning to Mining Park Vagonetto, a unique thematic park and museum where you will have the opportunity to follow the lives of miners and visit a real 18-meter underground gallery, use the existing train, and make stops in themed caves with a guide in various works. On the way to Nafpaktos, we will stop in the beautiful coastal town of Galaxidi.

In Nafpaktos, we will need to see its fortress overlooking the whole bay and learn why this town was always so important. In the old part of Nafpaktos, we will see its small port and say hello to famous Miguel de Cervantes. We will also visit one nearby located monastery.

On the way to Patras, we will admire the beautiful 2880-meter-long Rio–Antirrio Bridge, one of the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges and the longest of the fully suspended type. In the Patras suburb, we visit the Voudeni Mycenaean cemetery, a huge necropolis from 1500 BC with about 70 tombs, 2 of which are enormous.

From Partas, we will take a road to Sikyon, an ancient Greek city-state situated in the northern Peloponnese in the vicinity of Corinth. Here we will explore its beautiful archaeological site and museum. In Greek mythology first attested by Hesiod, here Prometheus tricked Zeus for humanity's benefit and thus incurred his wrath.

We will stay two nights in the coastal town of Nafplio (UNESCO Tentative List site), known for its hilly fortress and old quarter. From Nafplio we will come to explore the archaeological site Midea with one of the largest and best-preserved Mycenaean citadels, the archaeological site Argos (UNESCO Tentative List site) with a large theater, the Odeon, Roman baths, and other ruins, and Tiryns. The Mycenaean Acropolis of Tiryns (UNESCO World Heritage site), a Mycenaean site with 8-meter-thick walls, said to be built by Cyclops. This is the location from which the mythical hero Heracles was said to have performed his Twelve Labors.

On the way from Nafplio to Loutraki, we will visit two destinations: an archaeological site Asini, the ancient city mentioned by Homer, and the small 11th-century serene Agnountos monastery, a beautiful monument of Byzantine art, with a vibrant garden and captivating 1000-year-old frescoes.

After an overnight in Loutraki, before we take the road back to Athens, we will come to explore Acrocorinth, the Acropolis of Ancient Corinth, a monolithic 575-meter-high rock overlooking the ancient city of Corinth. Acrocorinth counts as the most impressive of the acropolis of mainland Greece and one of the most important medieval Greek fortresses.
