Aigai (Aegae) description
The archaeological site of Aegae, also known as Aigai, is situated in northern Greece, approximately 80 km southeast of Thessaloniki, at the foot of the Pierian Mountains. This site was the original capital of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, a role it held until the 4th century BC when the capital was moved to Pella.
Aegae was the seat of the Temenid dynasty, which included notable figures such as Philip II and Alexander the Great. The site is renowned for its royal necropolis, where several Macedonian kings were buried. The most famous of these tombs is that of Philip II, discovered by archaeologist Manolis Andronikos in 1977, which contained significant treasures and artifacts.
The excavations at Aegae have uncovered a wealth of archaeological findings, including gold and ivory beds, delicate frescoes, gold reliquaries, and royal weaponry. These discoveries highlight the prosperity and importance of the region during the Iron Age and the classical period. The site includes a large palace, a theatre, the Temple of Eucleia, the Acropolis, and extensive city walls.
In 1996, the archaeological site of Aegae was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its monumental significance in Western civilization and exceptional architecture. The site provides valuable insights into the culture, history, and society of the ancient Macedonians.
Visitors to Aegae can explore the Polycentric Museum, which houses many of the treasures found in the royal tombs. The site also includes the city, the Acropolis, and the surrounding area with fields and houses. The rich historical and artistic achievements, such as the magnificent wall paintings and ivory portraits, make this site a compelling destination for tourists interested in ancient history and archaeology.
Aegae is a living history of the Macedonian kingdom, offering a glimpse into the lives of its rulers and the spread of Greek culture throughout the ancient world. The site's unique blend of historical significance, artistic achievements, and well-preserved architecture makes it an essential visit for anyone interested in exploring the roots of Western civilization.
