Arta description
The city Arta was known in ancient times as Ambracia, and the origin and etymology of the name Arta is uncertain and debated. Arta is known for the medieval bridge over the Arachthos River. Arta is also known for its ancient sites from the era of Pyrrhus of Epirus and its well-preserved 13th-century castle. Arta's Byzantine history is reflected in its many Byzantine churches. The best known is the cathedral church the Panagia Paregoretissa (Mother of God the Consoling), built about 1290.
Arta was founded as a Corinthian colony in the 7th century B.C. In 294 BC, after 43 years of semi-autonomy under Macedonian suzerainty, Arta was given to Pyrrhus, king of the Molossians and of Epirus, who made it his capital, using Arta as a base to attack the Romans. Pyrrhus managed to achieve great but costly victories against the Romans, hence the phrase "Pyrrhic victory" which refers in particular to an exchange at the Battle of Asculum. Nevertheless, Pyrrhus found the time and means to adorn his capital with a palace, temples and theatres. In 146 BC, Arta became part of the Roman Republic.
Under Ottoman rule, the town was called Narda. It was occupied by Venetians in 1717 and the French in 1797, but the Ottomans retook it in 1799. Several battles took place near the city during the Greek War of Independence.
The modern city Arta is on the site of ancient Ambracia. Remains of the classic era include the ancient walls, the ruins of an ancient temple of Apollo, a small theatre, and remnants of the southwest cemetery.
The most important Byzantine church of Arta is the metropolitan cathedral church of the Paregoretissa, built ca. 1290 by Nikephoros I Komnenos Doukas and his wife Anna Palaiologina Kantakouzene. Part of the building used to house the Archaeological Collection of Arta.
The church is a large, almost square three-storey building. It is of the octagonal type, with the central dome supported by eight piers divided into three tiers. There are also four smaller domes on each corner of the church's flat roof, and a lantern. Its interior decoration is rich, with marble revetment up to the level of the galleries, and extensive surviving mosaics and frescoes above that.
The Archaeological Museum of Arta was established in 1973 as the Archaeological collection of Arta, and used the building of Paregoretissa church. In 2009 the collection has been moved to a brand new, purpose-built museum building.
The exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Arta includes three main sections: the public life, the cemeteries, and the private life of Ambraciotes, whilst at the start and end of the exhibition there are individual smaller sections covering the birth and fall of Ambracia, respectively.

We are going to stay 2 nights in the coastal town of Preveza because on the second day we will come to explore the large archaeological site Nicopolis (UNESCO Tentative List site), the capital city of the Roman province Epirus. After Nicopolis, on the way to Lefkada, we will visit the small fishing village Koronisia and will come to Arta, to walk over the impressive four-arched stone bridge known from Roman times and visit the archaeological museum. After Arta, we will visit the coastal town Vonitsa, with its impressive fortress and beautiful promenade crossed to a small islet.
After a night in Lefkada, we will see Faneromeni monastery, located high above Lefkada between pine trees, and admire the panoramic view. Later, we will take a road around Lefkada lagoon, to admire the beautiful surroundings. Before coming to Nafpaktos, we also will see the archaeological site Oeniadae (UNESCO Tentative List site), an ancient Greek city known for its well-preserved shipyard, and the Messolonghi lagoon.
In Nafpaktos, we will come to see the Nafpaktos fortress, and after we will take a small trip inland to see two remote and less-known monasteries: the women's monastery of Saints Nektarios & Fanourios and the men's monastery of Saints Augustine & Seraphim Sarov. After visiting monasteries, we will continue our way to the mountain town Arachova, and on the way, we will stop for lunch in the coastal town Galaxidi.
After Arachova, we will take the road toward Kalampaka, and on the way, we will visit the Thermopylae infocenter and see fortresses in the towns Lamia and Trikala. From Kalampaka, we will come to climb the steps of several Meteora monasteries (UNESCO World Heritage site).
After Meteora, we will come to see the mountain town Metsovo, famous for its wine and cheese. In Ioannina, we will see its Ottoman castle, beautiful cave, Silversmith Museum of Weapons and Jewelry, and on the way back to Igoumenitsa, we will visit the archaeological site Dodoni (UNESCO Tentative List site) with its huge ancient theater.
Day 1. We begin our tour by traveling to Hosios Loukas to explore the magnificent Hosios Loukas monastery (UNESCO World Heritage Site), a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. After that, we will come to the picturesque mountain town of Arachova for a visit. We will then proceed to Delphi for our overnight accommodation.
Day 2. After an overnight in Delphi, we will spend the day exploring the awe-inspiring Delphi archaeological site (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the ancient sanctuary of Apollo. Our visit continues at the excellent Delphi museum, which houses incredible artifacts from the site. Accommodation will be again in Delphi.
Day 3. After staying in Delphi, we travel to the charming coastal town of Galaxidi for exploration. We then continue to Nafpaktos to see its imposing fortress and explore the scenic Nafpaktos historical center. After that, we will come to Nafpaktos for accommodation.
Day 4. After an overnight in Nafpaktos, we travel to Messolonghi to experience its unique lagoon landscape. We then journey to Oeniadae to see the Oeniadae archaeological site (UNESCO Tentative List Site). Our day concludes with a visit to the Preveza historical center before accommodation in Preveza.
Day 5. After staying in Preveza, we travel to Arta to explore its museum and the iconic, historic Arta bridge. Later, we visit the ancient sanctuary and theater at the Dodoni archaeological site (UNESCO Tentative List Site). After that, we will come to Ioannina for accommodation.
Day 6. After an overnight in Ioannina, we dedicate the day to this lakeside city. We will explore the vast Ioannina castle and visit a fascinating local museum to delve into the region's rich history. We will be accommodated again in Ioannina.
Day 7. After a second night in Ioannina, we take a boat to the Ioannina islet. Here, we will explore the Ali Pasha museum and the serene Eleousa monastery. After that, we will come to Kalampaka for accommodation.
Day 8. After staying in Kalampaka, we travel to the extraordinary rock formations of Meteora to explore a few of its breathtaking monasteries (UNESCO World Heritage Site), perched atop towering stone pillars. We return to Kalampaka for our overnight stay.
Day 9. After an overnight in Kalampaka, we travel to Thermopylae to explore the informative infocenter at this famous battlefield. We then visit the historical landmark at Chaeronea and see the medieval old town of Livadeia. After that, we will come to Chalkida for accommodation.

We will stay again 2 nights in the coastal town of Volos, where we also will visit its archaeological museum to see artifacts from Sesklo and Dimini. Near Volos is located the mountain monastery of Holy Archangels, which we will also see on the same day.
Leaving Volos, we will come to the town of Larissa to see its modern archaeological museum and its well-preserved ancient theater (UNESCO Tentative List site). From Larissa, on the way to Kalampaka, we will stop in the town of Trikala to see its fortress. From Kalampaka we will reach several Meteora monasteries (UNESCO World Heritage site).
After the Meteora monasteries, we will come to see the mountain town of Metsovo, famous for its wine and cheese. In Montenegro, we will visit town Kotor (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period. In coastal town Budva we will walk its narrow streets of historical center and surrounding walls. We also will visit Old Bar, the settlement known from Byzantine Empire ages. On the way to Albania we will visit cave monastery Dajbabe with unique frescoes.
In Albania, we need to see historical center of town Krije and its museum, admire ancient theater in Durres, wonder on beautiful sea on Divjaka beach, and come to sleep in town Berat (UNESCO World Heritage Site), called as town of thousand windows. After Berat, we will visit archaeological site Apollonia (UNESCO Tentative List site), and come to see historical center of town Gjirokaster (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Here in Gjirokaster we will walk in Ottoman fortress and see local museum.
In Greece, we will stay in mainland, and see fortress of Ioannina, together with historical town and Silversmithing museum. We will admire huge amphitheater at Dodoni archaeological site (UNESCO Tentative List site), and cute small coastal town Parga with small fortress and gorgeous beach. Next day we will visit Nekromanteio Acheron, a Greek temple of necromancy, walk over famous bridge in Arta and see local museum.
Bext, we will visit archaeological site Oeniadae (UNESCO Tentative List site) with amphitheater and old shipyard, see Messolonghi lagoon, and come to coastal town Nafpaktos with beautiful long sandy beach. Here in Nafpaktos we will need to see a fortress and walk historical center. In Patras we need to see local fortress, rich museum (second after Athens museum), huge cathedral, and spend evening in local winery.
Next important location is large archaeological site Olympia (UNESCO World Heritage Site), with several museums on site. Next day, we will walk in archaeological site Messene (UNESCO Tentative List site), and move to coastal town Kalamata, to visit its cathedral and historical center. After Kalamata we will move to Sparta, to see archaeological site, king Leonidas monument, and visit local Olive oil museum.
Our way to Nafplio will be by mountain roads, we will see mountain town Kosmas and visit hidden in mountains Elonis monastery. We will take a lunch in coastal town Plaka, before arrival to Nafplio. In Nafplio (UNESCO Tentative List site), we will see historical center, fortress, and small sea fortress. In the area of Nafplio, we need to see archaeological site Argos, archaeological site Tiryns (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and huge archaeological site Mycenae (UNESCO World Heritage Site) with its museum.

After Kalamata we will move the middle leg of Peloponnese, the area called Mani, to see this area with very specific architecture.
Next important place to visit is Monemvasia, former island, now connected with by road with mainland. Here, we need to see historical center, and climb on top to visit a local dominant, a church. After, we will move to Sparta, to see archaeological site, king Leonidas monument, and visit local Olive oil museum. Close to Sparta we will visit another quite unique site, Mystras (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Veria, also spelled Veroia or Beroea, is a city in Central Macedonia, northern Greece, known for its rich history, Byzantine architecture, and proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aigai (modern Vergina). Historically an important center since antiquity and the Byzantine era, it is built on the foothills of Mt. Vermion and crossed by the River Tripotamo. The city has numerous churches, and is nicknamed ＂Little Jerusalem＂ for its many religious sites.
