We welcome you to come with us on 9-day circle tour from Athens to discover Central Greece. We will see the most important must-see attractions of Central Greece. We aimed this tour to first-time visitors of Greece interested in the classic attractions of Greece, Greek culture and cuisine.
After our car will pick you up in Athens, the very first attraction we will visit is town Livadeia, its old medieval part, where we will learn the history of the local Oracle. The next attraction to see is a historic walled monastery Hosios Loukas (UNESCO World Heritage site), founded in the mid-10th century, one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art.
In Delphi (UNESCO World Heritage site), famous for its Oracle, we will explore its archaeological site and museum. After second night in Delphi, we will take a coastal road toward beautiful town Nafpaktos, and on the way will visit small picturesque coastal town Galaxidi. In Nafpaktos, we will need to see it's fortress overlooking the whole bay, and learn why this town was always so important. In the old part of Nafpaktos, we will see its small port and say Hello to famous Miguel de Cervantes.
On the way to Patras, we will admire beautiful 2880 meters long Rio–Antirrio Bridge, is one of the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges and longest of the fully suspended type. In Patras, we visit the archaeological museum, fortress, and the cathedral of Saint Andrew, dedicated to the Apostle, the second-largest in the Balkans and a place of pilgrimage for Christians from all over the world.
From Patras, we will take a road to beautiful coastal town Nafplio, and on the way will visit important archaeological site Mycenae (UNESCO World Heritage site) and its museum. Mycenae, the heart of Mycenaean civilization, mostly known as the last phase of the Bronze Age in ancient Greece in the period approximately 1750 to 1050 BC. In Mycenae, we will see archaeological site and archaeological museum.
In Nafplio, we will come to its hilly Palamidi fortress, see its chambers and wall, and admire gorgeous view to the sea. We will see also another part of Nafplio, Acronauplia, older fortress built between Roman & Venetian eras. At evening, we will come for a walk along the fortress rock on the promenade, to enjoy panoramas of sea and sky during beautiful sunset.
On the next day we will come to see Mycenean Acropolis of Tiryns (UNESCO World Heritage site), Mycenaean site with 8m thick walls, said to be built by Cyclops. This is the location from which the mythical hero Heracles was said to have performed his Twelve Labours. We will continue this day with exploring Argos archaeological site, where we can see large theater, the Odeon, Roman baths, and other ruins.
After third night in Nafplio, we will come to explore famous Epidaurus (UNESCO World Heritage site), where we will see it grandiose ancient theater still involving in performances, its archaeological site and museum. Before arrive to Loutraki, we will admire the view of Corinth canal.
On the next day, after stay one night in coastal town Loutraki, we will climb steps and pathes of Acrocorinth, the acropolis of ancient Corinth, a monolithic rock overlooking the ancient city of Corinth. After Acrocorinth, we will come to explore Ancient Corinth and see its museum. Ancient Corinth was a powerful and prosperous city-state in ancient Greece, renowned for its strategic location on the Isthmus of Corinth. After that we will take a road back to Athens.

This off-season circle tour belongs to our category of Classic Greece tours focusing on must-see Greece Peloponnese locations, mostly UNESCO sites and well-known historical places. We suggest this tour if you have limited time in Greece and would like to know some of the must-see mainland Greece attractions.
The tour will start with visiting Mycenae (UNESCO World Heritage site), the heart of Mycenaean civilization, mostly known as the last phase of the Bronze Age in ancient Greece, spanning the period from approximately 1750 to 1050 BC. In Mycenae, we will see an archaeological site and an archaeological museum. We will come to stay in the coastal town Nafplio for two nights.
In Nafplio, which once served as a capital of Greece, we will see its impressive hilly fortress Palamidi (UNESCO Tentative List site) and the town's fortified part, Akronafplia. Later, we will come to town Argos to see its archaeological site (UNESCO Tentative List site).
On the way from Nafplio to Sparta, we will visit the archaeological site of Tiryns (UNESCO World Heritage site), a hill fort known from before the beginning of the Bronze Age. It reached its height of importance between 1400 and 1200 BC, when it became one of the most important centers of the Mycenaean world. Tiryns is associated with the myths surrounding Heracles, as his residence during his labors, and some sources cite it as his birthplace.
In Sparta, we will say hello to King Leonidas, king of the Ancient Greek city-state of Sparta, from approximately 530-480 BCE. He died during the Battle of Thermopylae. We will also walk the archaeological site of Sparta.
The next day, we will come to see Mystras (UNESCO World Heritage site), known in the Chronicle of the Morea as Myzethras or Myzithras, a fortified town near Sparta. We will explore the large collection of historic buildings and see the beautiful artworks that have survived inside the churches and other monuments. After returning back to Sparta, we will visit the well-known Olive Oil Museum.
Our next destination is the important site of Messene (UNESCO Tentative List site), the ruins of the large classical city-state of Ancient Messene. The site was founded in the Bronze Age as Ithome, and Ancient Messene was larger than Athens at the time; it had formidable fortification walls that were 9.5 kilometers in length and imposing public buildings and temples. The part of the Walls of Ancient Messene we will see after the archaeological site.
During the next day, we will explore Ancient Olympia (UNESCO World Heritage site), the ruined ancient sanctuary, home of the ancient Olympic Games, and former site of the massive Statue of Zeus, which had been ranked as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Here we will walk its large archaeological site and visit the archaeological museum of Olympia (one of the most important museums in Greece) that houses finds from the archaeological site, including a Praxiteles sculpture.
From Olympia, we will come to the important coastal town Patras, to see its impressive hilly castle, several sites from Roman times, and the Patras Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Andrew, a grand cathedral dedicated to the First-Called Apostle of Christ, Saint Andrew. This impressive cathedral is considered the largest Orthodox church in Greece and the third-largest Byzantine-style church in the Balkans.
After an overnight in Patras, we will come to see the Patras Archaeological Museum, the second most important after the Acropolis Museum in Athens. After the museum, we will see one of two fortresses intended to protect the entrance of the Corinthian Gulf. The Rio fortress, historically known as the Castle of the Morea, in opposition to its counterpart, the Castle of Rumelia at Antirrio, was built by the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II in 1499 above the ruins of an ancient temple of Poseidon. Along with its twin, the Antirrio Castle, the fortresses were nicknamed the Little Dardanelles.
Before returning back to Athens, we will explore another important and well-known place, Ancient Corinth. Here we will see an archaeological site and museum. We also will see the impressive Corinth Canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. Completed in 1893, it cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese peninsula from the Greek mainland.
We welcome you to travel with us off the beaten path across Central Greece. Our 9-day circle tour from Athens will come to many lesser-known places: archaeological sites with ancient theaters and museums, small ancient monasteries, Mycenaean acropolis and tombs, fortresses and castles, beautiful coastal towns and taverns where locals eat.
We will start our tour with visiting Brauron, one of the twelve cities of ancient Attica, nowadays known as the sanctuary of Artemis, to see its archaeological site and museum. Our next destination is the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods, founded by Herodes Atticus around 160 AD, today contains ruins of Roman baths and several elegant statues of Egyptian gods.
After that, we will come to Marathon, that town where the Battle of Marathon was in 490 BCE, in which the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians. Legend has it that Pheidippides, a Greek herald at the battle, was sent running from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory, which is how the marathon running race was conceived in modern times. In Marathon, we will explore its archaeological museum.
We will stay two nights in Chalkida (also known as Chalcis or Halkida). From here, we will come to explore the archaeological site of Eretria (UNESCO Tentative List site) with its ancient theater and museum. Eretria was an important Greek polis in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, mentioned by many famous writers and actively involved in significant historical events. The earliest mention of Eretria was by Homer in his Iliad, who listed Eretria as one of the Greek cities that sent ships to the Trojan War.
In Chalkida, we will come to Karababa Castle, an Ottoman castle of the 17th century, to look around, see its small museum with fantastic sculptures from Venetian times, and admire a beautiful viewpoint over the south bay of Chalkida.
From Chalkida, we will come to town Thiva (known also as Thebes), one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, which played an important role in Greek myths. This is that Thebes that ended Spartan hegemony at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC. Here we will explore its archaeological museum.
We will walk along a beautiful river, passing by the old medieval part of Livadeia, and will learn the history of the local oracle. In Chaeronea, we will see its ancient theater and see the Lion of Chaeronea. According to Pausanias, the lion was erected by the Thebans to commemorate their fallen.
We will stay overnight in town Amfikleia and come in the morning to Mining Park Vagonetto, a unique thematic park and museum where you will have the opportunity to follow the lives of miners and visit a real 18-meter underground gallery, use the existing train, and make stops in themed caves with a guide in various works. On the way to Nafpaktos, we will stop in the beautiful coastal town Galaxidi.
In Nafpaktos, we will need to see its fortress overlooking the whole bay and learn why this town was always so important. In the old part of Nafpaktos, we will see its small port and say hello to famous Miguel de Cervantes. We will also visit one nearby located monastery.
On the way to Patras, we will admire the beautiful 2880-meter-long Rio–Antirrio Bridge, one of the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges and the longest of the fully suspended type. In the Patras suburb, we visit the Voudeni Mycenaean cemetery, a huge necropolis from 1500 BC with about 70 tombs, 2 of which are enormous.
From Partas, we will take a road to Sikyon, an ancient Greek city-state situated in the northern Peloponnese in the vicinity of Corinth. Here we will explore its beautiful archaeological site and museum. In Greek mythology first attested by Hesiod, here Prometheus tricked Zeus for humanity's benefit and thus incurred his wrath.
We will stay two nights in the coastal town of Nafplio (UNESCO Tentative List site), known for its hilly fortress and old quarter. From Nafplio we will come to explore the archaeological site Midea with one of the largest and best-preserved Mycenaean citadels, the archaeological site Argos (UNESCO Tentative List site) with a large theater, the Odeon, Roman baths, and other ruins, and Tiryns. The Mycenaean Acropolis of Tiryns (UNESCO World Heritage site), a Mycenaean site with 8 meter thick walls, said to be built by Cyclops. This is the location from which the mythical hero Heracles was said to have performed his Twelve Labors.
On the way from Nafplio to Loutraki, we will visit two destinations: an archaeological site Asini, the ancient city mentioned by Homer, and the small 11th-century serene Agnountos monastery, a beautiful monument of Byzantine art, with a vibrant garden and captivating 1000-year-old frescoes.
After an overnight in Loutraki, before we take the road back to Athens, we will come to explore Acrocorinth, the Acropolis of Ancient Corinth, a monolithic 575-meter-high rock overlooking the ancient city of Corinth. Acrocorinth counts as the most impressive of the acropolis of mainland Greece and one of the most important medieval Greek fortresses.
This is that Acrocorinth that is mentioned in the ancient Corinthian myth from the 2nd century CE, about a dispute between Poseidon (the sea) and Helios (the sun): the verdict was that the Isthmus of Corinth belonged to Poseidon and the acropolis of Corinth (Acrocorinth) to Helios.

This off-season tour is focused on people who would like to get to know deeply the history of Greece and walk that ancient historical places where are roots of culture of our civilization. Around the world such places are on the list of UNESCO. And many other places now expecting to be on UNESCO list; such places are prepared, available for public for fraction of cost, and are on so called UNESCO tentative list.
During this tour we going to visit most of UNESCO places and UNESCO tentative list places, located in Greece mainland. Greece is so rich with history that visit all UNESCO places in one tour will take very long time. Because of that we, Monterrasol Travel, created this tour to be able to visit the most of UNESCO places in one tour.
Come with us to 31 days all seasons tour over Southern Balkans, to explore 3 countries: Montenegro, Albania, Greece.
In Montenegro, we will visit town Kotor (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period. In coastal town Budva we will walk its narrow streets of historical center and surrounding walls. We also will visit Old Bar, the settlement known from Byzantine Empire ages. On the way to Albania we will visit cave monastery Dajbabe with unique frescoes.
In Albania, we need to see historical center of town Krije and its museum, admire ancient theater in Durres, wonder on beautiful sea on Divjaka beach, and come to sleep in town Berat (UNESCO World Heritage Site), called as town of thousand windows. After Berat, we will visit archaeological site Apollonia (UNESCO Tentative List site), and come to see historical center of town Gjirokaster (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Here in Gjirokaster we will walk in Ottoman fortress and see local museum.
In Greece, we will stay within mainland. The very first Greek place is Ioannina, where we will see historical center, fortress, and Silversmithing museum. We will admire huge amphitheater at Dodoni archaeological site (UNESCO Tentative List site), and cute small coastal town Parga with a fortress and gorgeous beach. Next day we will visit Nekromanteio Acheron, a Greek temple of necromancy, walk over famous bridge in Arta and see local museum.
Bext, we will visit archaeological site Oeniadae (UNESCO Tentative List site) with amphitheater and old shipyard, see Messolonghi lagoon, and come to coastal town Nafpaktos with beautiful long sandy beach. Here in Nafpaktos we will need to see a fortress and walk historical center. In next town, Patras we need to see local fortress, rich museum (second after Athens museum), huge cathedral, and will spend evening in local winery.
Next important location is large archaeological site Olympia (UNESCO World Heritage Site), with several museums on site. Next day, we will come to the most Southern part of this are of Greece, to see fortress Methoni (UNESCO Tentative List site). After we cross a whole peninsula, we will see another fortress, Koroni (UNESCO Tentative List site). Next day, we will walk in archaeological site Messene (UNESCO Tentative List site), and move to coastal town Kalamata, to visit its cathedral and historical center. After Kalamata we will move the middle leg of Peloponnese, the area called Mani, to see this area with very specific architecture.
Next important place to visit is Monemvasia, former island, now connected with by road with mainland. Here, we need to see historical center, and climb on top to visit a local dominant, a church. After, we will move to Sparta, to see archaeological site, king Leonidas monument, and visit local Olive oil museum. Close to Sparta we will visit another quite unique site, Mystras (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Our way to Nafplio will be by mountain roads, we will see mountain town Kosmas and visit hidden in mountains Elonis monastery. We will take a lunch in coastal town Plaka, before arrival to Nafplio. In Nafplio (UNESCO Tentative List site), we will see historical center, fortress, and small sea fortress. In the area of Nafplio, we need to see archaeological site Argos, archaeological site Tiryns (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and huge archaeological site Mycenae (UNESCO World Heritage Site) with its museum.
After Nafplio we need to see archaeological site Epidaurus (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and its museum, and take a rest in coastal town Loutraki. On the way to Athens we will walk in Ancient Corinth archaeological site, admire famous Corinth Canal, and finally arrive to Athens.
