Dimitsana's history dates back to ancient times, with the site originally being the ancient Arcadian town of Teuthis. The name "Dimitsana" first appeared in a manuscript from 967, possibly of Slav origin. The village played a crucial role in the Greek Revolution of 1821, particularly as a supplier of gunpowder, and was also an important hub of resistance against the German occupation during World War II.

Dimitsana is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, featuring stone-built houses and mansions, many of which have been restored. The village is registered as a traditional settlement, protected by the Ministry of Culture, making it a unique and authentic destination.

The village boasts several attractions, including the Open air Hydrokinesis (water power) Museum, which showcases pre-industrial facilities like flour mills, tanneries, and gunpowder mills. The museum highlights the importance of water-power in traditional society, focusing on the main pre-industrial techniques that take advantage of water to produce a variety of goods, it links them to the history and daily life of the local society over the ages.

Other notable sites include the Ecclesiastical Museum, the Public Historical Library, and the Philosophou Monastery, which was a key center of resistance and education during the Greek Revolution. Other important monasteries in the vicinity of Dimitsana are Agiou Ioannou Prodromou monastery and Aimyalon monastery.

Dimitsana is surrounded by natural beauty, with the Lousios River Gorge being a significant attraction. The gorge is home to several monasteries and offers hiking trails of varying difficulty, including the Menalon Trail and Lousios path. The area is also suitable for rafting on the Lousios River, making it a haven for nature lovers.

The village's central square is a hub of social life, surrounded by traditional stone buildings and featuring a large spring. Dimitsana is home to several museums, including the Ecclesiastical Museum and the Town Library, which house artifacts and books related to the village's history and the Greek Revolution.

The village offers a range of accommodations, from traditional guesthouses to luxurious hotels, and features many taverns, cafes, and bars where visitors can enjoy local cuisine and relax in a picturesque setting. Its relative obscurity among foreign tourists adds to its charm, making it a hidden gem in the Peloponnese region.
