The town has a population of approximately 12,000 to 15,000 citizens. Despite its ancient roots, Kalampaka is a modern town with well-developed tourist facilities, including hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, traditional taverns, and various shops.
Kalampaka's history dates back thousands of years. In ancient times, it was known as Aeginion, and during the Byzantine era, it was called Stagi. The name Kalampaka originated from the Turkish words "kale-bak," meaning prestigious castle, during the Ottoman dominion.

The town itself has ancient Greek and Byzantine remnants, including the 10th-century church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which incorporates relics of an ancient Greek temple.
