Metsovo description
Although Greece may be known for its striking beaches and splendid islands, it is certainly an ideal destination for the winter months. And with 80% of its territory being mountainous, it has some fantastic well-kept secret places that deserve to be known, such as the beautiful and traditional Metsovo, a small town in Epirus, perched at 1,000 metres above sea level on one of the slopes of the Pindus Mountain range.
The town, located at the crossroads of Epirus, Western Macedonia and Thessaly, is famous for its local cheeses and wine making industries. Metsovo is also a popular winter vacation destination and a ski resort.
Metsovo is a popular destination, as it has perfectly retained its character and traditions over the years. While you explore the small town, you will revel in the beauty of its traditional stone and wooden houses and its mountains views.
The derivation of the name Metsovo is from the few Slav words meaning bear place.
With its air of impressionist paintings, this marvelous small town is ideal for art and culture lovers. Discover the area’s two-story stone and wood houses, known for their characteristic red roofs, its green scenery and its fascinating cuisine.
The surroundings are perfect for nature lovers, with a plethora of hiking trails, pine forests and hidden rivers.
Starting in the mid-17th century, the residents in the region of Metsovo were relieved from the obligation to pay the regular and ad hoc taxes that were usually paid by Christian residents in other Ottoman regions, on the condition that they would pay a lump sum per year. The Ottoman administration often made such arrangements for groups of its subjects that offered a special service to the state.
The special service provided by the Metsovo residents was the guarding of the local mountain passes and the servicing of travelers. The special tax regime did not mean self-government in theory. The notion of autonomy was unknown to the Ottoman understanding of polity. In practice, however, the granting of tax exemptions was equivalent to self-governance of the area.
