Oiniadai (Oeniadae) description
The archaeological site of Oeniadae (also known as Oiniades or Iniades) is located in northern Greece, specifically in the region of Aetolia-Acarnania, near the mouth of the Achelous river. The site is situated on a flat-topped hill surrounded by marshes, which historically provided natural protection against invaders.
Oeniadae first appears in historical records in the 5th century BC and was an important port town of ancient Acarnania. It played a significant role in various alliances and conflicts, including being part of the Peloponnesian League and later the Delian League. The city's control changed hands several times, involving the Aetolians, Macedonians, and Romans.
The site is notable for its well-preserved ancient fortifications, which include polygonal walls that still stand up to 12 feet high. Key features include a theatre with excellent acoustics, built in two phases during the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, and a bath complex dating back to the 3rd century BC. The city also had a shipyard with five slipways, one of the best-preserved ancient shipyards.
Oeniadae had three ports, with the main fortified port featuring a shipyard and shipsheds. This port was used for hauling, repairing, and storing ships, and its structure included a roofed area with colonnades carved into the rock. The other two ports were used for commerce and smaller vessels.
The theatre, located near the Agora, has a capacity for 4,600 spectators and offers panoramic views of the Achelous River. It was constructed in two phases, with the initial stage built during Athenian occupation and later modifications possibly by Philip V of Macedonia. The site also includes a small temple near the port and various public and private buildings.
Today, the site of Oeniadae is part of the municipal unit Oiniades within the Messolonghi municipality. The area is still relatively untouched by modern development, making it an authentic archaeological site. Visitors can explore the ruins, attend cultural events like the Oeniades Festival, and appreciate the historical and architectural significance of this ancient city.
