Thermopylae description
The worldwide famous king of the city-state of Sparta is a true depiction of braveness and leadership since the war against the Persians in Thermopylae (480 BC) was really monumental and one of the most epic battles in the Greek-Persian War.
The story of the 300 Spartans, who held off the might of the invading (King Xerxes I) Persian army, is a powerful tale of overcoming long odds to emerge victorious.
King Leonidas' 300 Spartans face an army of 250,000 Persian soldiers on the shores of the Mediterranean. The battle, the most astonishing and unequal, is a landmark in the World's history.
The Persians asked the defenders to give their arms up but King Leonidas replied to them with the heroic phrase "Come and get them!"
This phrase has been, and will always be, a bright example for the generations to come, of one's doing his duty for his country.
The legend of Thermopylae, as told by Herodotus, has it that the Spartans had consulted the Oracle at Delphi earlier in the year. The Oracle is said to have made the following prophecy:
"O ye men who dwell in the streets of broad Lacedaemon!
Honor the festival of the Carneia!! Otherwise,
Either your glorious town shall be sacked by the children of Perseus,
Or, in exchange, must all through the whole Laconian country
Mourn for the loss of a king, descendant of great Heracles."
Herodotus tells us that Leonidas, in line with the prophecy, was convinced he was going to certain death since his forces were not adequate for a victory, and so he selected only Spartans with living sons.
Walk on the sacred site of one of the most memorable battles in history and a timeless symbol of heroism is quite a experience!
