Romania description

Romania is situated in East Central Europe, bordering the Black Sea, and shares borders with Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova, Serbia, and Ukraine. It also shares a maritime border with Turkey.

Romania covers an area of 238,391 km², making it slightly smaller than the United Kingdom or the U.S. state of Oregon. The country's geography is roughly equally divided between mountainous, hilly, and lowland terrains. The Carpathian Mountains dominate the center of Romania, with the highest point being Moldoveanu Peak at 2,544 meters. Romania is home to the largest surface of virgin forests in Europe, particularly in the Southern Carpathians, which constitute Europe's largest unfragmented forested area.

Romania has a coastline along the Black Sea. The country is home to several big rivers, including the Danube, which forms a significant part of Romania's southwestern border with Serbia and its southern border with Bulgaria. Other major rivers in Romania include the Prut, Olt, and Siret, which are tributaries to the Danube. The Mureș River is also a significant river, flowing west into Hungary where it meets the Danube.

Romania's climate varies from temperate to continental, with cold winters and warm summers. The climate is influenced by the country's geography, with the Carpathian Mountains creating a rain shadow effect that divides the country into three climatic zones: the temperate zone in the north, the continental zone in the south, and the mountainous zone in the center.

Romania has a rich history, with the ancient Dacians inhabiting the region before the Roman conquest. The country was part of the Ottoman Empire for several centuries before gaining independence in the late 19th century. Romania played a significant role in both World War I and World War II, and after the war, it became a socialist republic. In 1989, the country experienced a revolution that led to the fall of communism and the establishment of a democratic government.

Romania offers a variety of cultural attractions, including old towns, fortresses, waterfalls, monasteries, and archeological sites. The capital city, Bucharest, is a cosmopolitan city with a well-preserved medieval architecture and renowned restaurants. Other significant cities include Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, Constanța, Craiova, and Brașov. Romania is home to several UNESCO sites, including the Danube Delta, the historic center of Sighisoara, and the monasteries of Moldavia.

Romania has been recognized for its cultural and natural heritage, with several sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The country has also been featured in travel guides and publications, such as Lonely Planet and Huffington Post, for its unique blend of medieval and modern characteristics, making it an attractive location for both expats and tourists.

Romania has a total of 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and 15 sites on the UNESCO Tentative List.
