The town's main attraction is the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is home to almost fifty ancient and historically significant white-stone buildings, and has enough to keep you busy for days. Founded in 1337, the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is undeniably the major draw for the city and the symbol of Russian Christianity. Blue-and-gold cupolas offset by snow-white walls, a color scheme that lies at the heart of the Russian perception of divinity, and Sergiyev Posad's monastery is a textbook example. It doesn't get any holier than this in Russia, for the place was founded in 1340 by the country's most revered saint, St. Sergius of Radonezh Since the 14th century, pilgrims have been journeying here to pay homage to him. The imposing Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is the most important Russian monastery and the spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church.
