In the 12th century, Belgrade became the capital of the Serbian Kingdom under King Stefan Dragutin, and later, it served as the capital of the Serbian Despotate during the reign of Stefan Lazarevic. The city was conquered by the Ottomans in 1521 and remained under their rule for nearly 400 years, during which time it was a significant center of Ottoman power in the Balkans. The Ottomans brought Islamic culture and architecture to Belgrade, which is still visible in the city's historic architecture today.
The Serbian Revolution in the early 19th century led to Belgrade being named the capital of Serbia once again in 1841. The city played a crucial role in the country's struggle for independence from Ottoman rule, and it was frequently besieged and bombed during the Ottoman-Habsburg wars. In the 20th century, Belgrade was the capital of Yugoslavia, a federation of South Slavic states that included Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Macedonia. After the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Belgrade became the capital of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and later the capital of Serbia and Montenegro, before finally becoming the capital of an independent Serbia in 2006.
