This serene location offers a peaceful and picturesque setting, surrounded by natural beauty and historical significance. The monastery's location near Novi Sad and other Fruska Gora monasteries makes it part of a broader cultural and historical tour of the region. The Fruska Gora area is known for its rolling hills, forests, and vineyards, providing a serene backdrop to the historical site. The Grgeteg Monastery is believed to have been founded in 1471 by Despot Vuk Brankovic, also known as Zmaj Ognjeni Vuk, in honor of his father Grgur Brankovic (Grgur the Blind). The earliest historical records about the monastery date back to 1545/1546. The monastery experienced periods of abandonment, notably before the 1690 Great Migration of the Serbs, but was renewed in 1708 by Bishop Isaija Đakovic. The current church at Grgeteg Monastery was built in the baroque style around 1770. The monastery underwent significant restoration in 1898, led by the architect Hermann Bolle, during which the residential buildings surrounding the church were reconstructed. The church's interior features a notable iconostasis, initially painted and inlaid by Jakov Orfelin in 1774-1775, and later replaced by a 1902 work of Uros Predic. The Grgeteg Monastery experienced significant turmoil between 1776 and 1777, during which it was abolished under the administration of Metropolitan Vikentije (Jovanovic Vidak). However, it was later restored and continues to be an important cultural and historical site. The Grgeteg Monastery is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and holds significant cultural and historical importance. It was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1990 and is protected by the Republic of Serbia. The monastery is well-maintained and protected, ensuring its historical and cultural significance are preserved for future generations. The restoration efforts, particularly those led by Hermann Bolle, have helped maintain the monastery's architectural integrity. Visitors should be prepared to explore the monastery complex, including the church and residential buildings. Visitors can explore the baroque church, admire the intricate iconostasis, and walk through the residential buildings that enclose the church from all four sides. Respect for the monastery's cultural and historical significance is important, and visitors are advised to dress modestly. The surrounding natural beauty and other nearby monasteries on Fruska Gora mountain make it a comprehensive and enriching experience.
