Mediana description
Mediana, an archaeological site located in the eastern suburb of Niš, Serbia, dates back to the late 3rd and early 4th century of the Roman period. It was a palace and summer residence of Constantine the Great, one of the most important Roman emperors. The site represents a luxurious residence with a highly organized economy, featuring a villa with peristyle, thermae, granary, and water tower.
The villa, which occupies the central position in Mediana, comprises an area of about 6,000 square meters and includes thermae on the west side and a smaller nymphaeum on the east side. The excavations carried out at Mediana from 2000 to 2011 significantly changed our knowledge about the complex, revealing sculptures, frescoes, and mosaics. The site was deliberately destroyed for the purpose of building the entire complex, which belongs to a large group of buildings.
Mediana was an imperial villa built for pleasure and state affairs, but also as an agricultural estate. In Mediana, taxes were collected and further distributed as food to support the imperial, military, and clerical apparatus. The importance of Mediana can be seen through its residential-administrative, economic, and religious functions. The residential part consists of buildings with richly decorated architectural ornaments, mosaics, frescoes, and sculptures.
The economic part of Mediana consists of a large number of workshops and warehouses for storing goods. The sacral part consists of two early Christian churches, which were excavated in 2000 and 2007, respectively. The findings are evidence of Mediana being a highly Christian community. The site was destroyed in the invasion of the Huns in 441-443, and the area of Mediana was repopulated, but on a much smaller scale, only in the Middle Ages.
Mediana represents proof of the wealth and glory of the Roman city - Naissus (modern city Niš). The imperial villa is eye-catching, ornamented with frescoes and mosaics. Especially remarkable are marble sculptures, decorative columns, heated baths-thermae, and a water supply system - aqueduct. The site is declared an immovable cultural asset of exceptional importance and is located halfway from the center of Niš to Niš Spa.

The National Museum of Niš is also a must-visit, as it houses many artifacts found in Mediana, including sculptures, frescoes, and mosaics. The museum includes buildings, an Archaeological hall, Mediana, Skull Tower, The Gallery Sinagoga, Memorial hall 12th February - the concentration camp from the Second World War, and the literary legacy of Stevan Sremac, a famous writer, and Branko Miljković, a poet.
Mediana is located halfway from the center of Niš to Niš Spa, making it an ideal stop for those looking to explore the region's rich history and culture.
