Serbia is a landlocked country situated in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe. It shares borders with four of the six former Yugoslavian socialist republics: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Republic of Macedonia, and Montenegro. Additionally, it borders Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania.
The country covers an area of 77,474 km² (excluding Kosovo), which is about the size of the Czech Republic or slightly smaller than the US state of South Carolina. Serbia's terrain is varied, with rich fertile plains in the north, limestone ranges and basins in the east, and mountains and hills in the southeast.
The Pannonian Plain covers the northern third of the country, while the easternmost tip extends into the Wallachian Plain. The terrain of the central part consists chiefly of hills traversed by rivers, with mountains dominating the southern third of Serbia.
The Dinaric Alps stretch in the west and southwest, following the flow of the rivers Drina and Ibar, while the Carpathian Mountains and Balkan Mountains stretch in a north-south direction in eastern Serbia. Ancient mountains in the southeast corner belong to the Rilo-Rhodope Mountain system. Elevation ranges from the Midžor peak of the Balkan Mountains at 2,169 meters (the highest peak in Serbia, excluding Kosovo) to the lowest point of just 17 meters near the Danube river at Prahovo.
Serbia has no coastline, being a landlocked country. However, it is crossed or borders several big rivers, including the Danube, Sava, Morava, Nishava, Timish, Timok, Drina, Ibar, and others. The largest lake is Đerdap Lake, covering an area of 163 square kilometers.
The climate in Serbia is continental, with a gradual transition between the four seasons. The northern and central parts of the country experience cold winters and hot, humid summers with well-distributed rainfall. The southern areas are subject to Mediterranean climate influences, with relatively cold winters with heavy snowfall and hot, dry summers and autumns. The mean January temperatures are around 0°C, and mean July temperatures are around 22°C.
Serbia has a rich history, with the medieval Serbian state emerging in the 12th century. It was part of Yugoslavia for most of the 20th century, and after Tito's death in 1980, resurgent nationalism led to the secession of several Yugoslav republics and civil war in the early 1990s. Serbia declared independence from Serbia and Montenegro in 2006, rendering the two republics independent and sovereign countries.
Serbia offers a variety of cultural attractions, including old towns, fortresses, waterfalls, monasteries, and archeological sites. The capital city, Belgrade, is a cosmopolitan city with a well-preserved medieval architecture and renowned restaurants. Novi Sad, the second city, is a cultural and educational center with a university town atmosphere. Serbia is home to several UNESCO sites, including the medieval monastery of Studenica, the medieval monastery of Visoki Dečani, and the Gamzigrad-Romuliana, Palace of Galerius.
Serbia has been recognized for its cultural and natural heritage, with several sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The country has also been featured in travel guides and publications, such as Lonely Planet and Huffington Post, for its unique blend of oriental, central European, and Balkan cuisines, as well as its rich history and cultural attractions.

Veria, also spelled Veroia or Beroea, is a city in Central Macedonia, northern Greece, known for its rich history, Byzantine architecture, and proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aigai (modern Vergina). Historically an important center since antiquity and the Byzantine era, it is built on the foothills of Mt. Vermion and crossed by the River Tripotamo.
